NIA pursues the implementation of 36 irrigation projects: 12 foreign-assisted, 21 locally-funded (including continuing activities and carry-over projects) and three inter-agency projects. Ten are located in Luzon, eight in Visayas, five in Mindanao and 13 with subprojects in selected provinces nationwide.
Other activities for the year are the repair and rehabilitation of national and communal systems, organization and development of irrigators’ associations and feasibility studies and packaging of potential projects.
As of the end of the first quarter, the agency accomplished 9% of the targeted area of 20,381 ha for generation or 1,864 ha and 35% of 81,285 ha for rehabilitation or 28,652 ha.
Some 10,190 jobs were generated in the construction of new irrigation projects and rehabilitation of existing irrigation systems.
Irrigation Development for the year involves a funding requirement of P6.192 B, broken down into: P4.166 B regular budget, P0.650 B carry-over funds and P1.376 B inter-agency funds. Total available allotment is P2.614 B with cash and non-cash support of P0.468 B or 18% of the available allotment. Obligations incurred amounted to P1.222 B. (see Annex C for details)
The Agency now manages 199 NIS under 114 responsibility centers nationwide with a total service area of 695,796 ha. The service area increased by 5,557 ha from the previous year’s area with the partial operation of Malitubog-Maridagao Irrigation System in Region 12 and Bubunawan Irrigation System in Region 10. The total irrigated area was 469,945 ha broken down into 441,202 ha during the dry season (November 2004 to April 2005) and 28,743 ha during the wet season (May 2005 to October 2005).
NIA provides adequate equipment for the construction, rehabilitation of existing irrigation systems and O&M activities. As of end of March 2005, 61% overall equipment operability was attained.
