NIA Inaugurates 7 Irrigation Projects in Sanchez Mira, Cagayan

NIA Region II – The National Irrigation Administration (NIA), presided by Senior Deputy Administrator Abraham B. Bagasin, inaugurated and turned over seven (7) irrigation projects worth P93 million in the Municipality of Sanchez Mira, Cagayan on October 1-2, 2021. These projects have a total service area of 475.61 hectares, benefitting 393 farmers and their families.

On October 1, 2021, NIA inaugurated the P10-million Labbac Small Irrigation Project (Labbac SIP) located in Barangay Namuac, Sanchez Mira, Cagayan. The project is part of Namilagan Communal Irrigation System (Namilagan CIS) and has a Firmed-Up Service Area (FUSA) of 122.79 hectares with 78 farmer beneficiaries. Like other CIS in Sanchez Mira, Cagayan, the system was originally a Private Zanjera, local term of farmers who organized themselves to operate and maintain a privately constructed irrigation system. The project includes the construction of diversion dam, canalization works, canal structures, terminal facilities, and access road.

Officers and members of Grande Sanchez Mira Farmers Association, Inc., headed by President Franklin A. dela Cruz, SMLCI President Fernando G. Cristobal, all CIS Presidents (NIA-assisted) of Sanchez Mira, Namuac Barangay Officials headed by Brgy. Captain Fernando A. Guiang, CBIMO Head Office employees led by Mr. Victorio F. Urbina, Engr. Minda A. Battung of East Apayao Abulug Irrigation System, and representatives from the FBS Construction attended the event.

During the second day, NIA conducted the Mass Turnover Ceremony of six (6) other communal irrigation systems to the Irrigators Associations of Sanchez Mira. These include the 1) P23-million Cusiten CIS with service area of 186.20 hectares and 59 farmer-beneficiaries, 2) P5-million Capanickian CIS with service area of 53.30 hectares and 67 farmer-beneficiaries, 3) P5-million Namilagan CIS with service area of 122.79 hectares and 78 farmer-beneficiaries, 4) P15-million Nagkarsuan CIS with a service area of 72 hectares and 64 farmer-beneficiaries, 5) P5-million Pangyan Small Water Impounding System (Pangyan SWIS) with service area of 41.32 hectares and 47 farmer-beneficiaries, and 6) P30-million Pangyan and Battuguit CIS under the Pangyan SWIS. Local Government Officials and Irrigators Associations in Sanchez Mira, Cagayan attended the turnover ceremony.

Despite the prevalence of COVID-19 Pandemic, NIA remains true to its commitment in providing efficient, reliable, and sustainable irrigation service to the Filipino farmers, the agricultural heroes who feed the nation.

NIA Inaugurates P814.167-Million Sta. Rita SRIP in Samar

NIA Region VIII – The National Irrigation Administration (NIA), headed by Administrator Ricardo R. Visaya, inaugurated the P814.167-million Sta. Rita Small Reservoir Irrigation Project (Sta. Rita SRIP) on October 5, 2021 in the Municipality of Sta. Rita, Samar.

Sta. Rita SRIP includes the construction of an Earthfill dam and irrigation outlet works from which the service canal draws water for agricultural land. The project will provide timely and reliable irrigation water supply to 960 hectares of agricultural lands in the barangays of Maligaya, San Eduardo, Tulay, Camayse, Tominamos, Anibongon, Sitio Ormocanay, Gumamela, and Kadaragan, benefitting 764 farmers and their families. It is also expected to provide other incidental benefits, such as flood control, aquaculture, hydropower generation, domestic water supply, and recreational facility.

NIA Region VIII Manager Ruby C. Tuan, Jr., Western Samar Provincial Governor Reynolds Michael T. Tan, represented by Samar Provincial Investment and Trade Promotions Officer Brett Delos Santos, Sta. Rita Municipal Mayor Joven P. Tiu, Samar 2nd District Representative Sharee Ann T. Tan, represented by Chief of Staff Nelieta Baguna, Silaga River Irrigators Association President Heracleo M. Cajafe, other local government officials, and IAs were present during the event.

Sta. Rita SRIP is the eighth irrigation project that was inaugurated/turned over by NIA for the month of October 2021. Being the lead government agency mandated to develop all possible sources of water for irrigation, NIA remains steadfast on its commitment in providing efficient, reliable, and sustainable irrigation service in the country.
