SETTING THE BAR: ISABELA SETS A NEW YIELD STANDARD FOR LOCAL FARMERS

March 19, 2024, 1:53 PM

On March 15, 2024, the Francis Domingo Nitura (FDN) Integrated Farm proudly hosted its Harvest Day World Breaking Rice Project 2024, a groundbreaking event that aimed to challenge the existing Asian record for crop harvesting that took place at the FDN Farm located in Ballesteros, Aurora, Isabela.

Led by Baluarte's Irrigators Association (IA) President, Mr. Francisco Domingo Nitura himself, the National Irrigation Administration (NIA) along with its Central Office and the NIA Magat River Integrated Irrigation System (NIA MARIIS) were present to witness the event. FDN served as a service area under NIA MARIIS Division 3, further underscoring the significance of the occasion.

The event was also witnessed by Department of Agriculture (DA) Assistant Secretary Noel Padre, DA OIC Regional Executive Director, Undersecretary Department of Justice (DOJ) Eric Vids, Regional Field Office-II Rose Mary G. Aquino, Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice) Deputy Executive Director Karen Barroga Ph.D., DA Cagayan Valley Research Center Agricultural Center Chief III/Manager Engr. Rolando Pedro, National Seed Quality Control Services (NSQCS) San Mateo Isabela Bureau of Plant Industry Center Chief  Julito Claveron, Ph.D. , Agricultural Training Institute OIC Center Director Claris Alaska, Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) Provincial Director Vilma C. Cabrera, Representatives from the  Provincial Government of Isabela, Narra Palawan Council members, and other notable agencies. This also includes attendees from Isabela State University Cauayan Campus such as President Ricmar P. Aquino, Ph.D., College of Agriculture Dean Dr. Jonathan N. Nayga, and interns, retired lawyers transitioning  back to farming from Ateneo School of Law Utopia Fraternity,  and other aspiring individuals dedicated to the pursuit of agriculture.

This event represented a historic milestone as it marked the first official validation of cropping results. Despite falling short of the intended target, the measured outcomes showcased an average yield of 11,570 kilograms per hectare (231.4 cavans per hectare) on wet weight and 9,606.54 kilograms per hectare (192.13 cavans per hectare) on dry weight, surpassing a mere world record. The event instilled a newfound belief among farmers that extraordinary achievements are attainable. Encouraged by this realization, Mr. Nitura recounted his experience upon returning from the United States, where he gathered feedback indicating no improvement in yield. This led him to explore mechanical transplanters, revolutionizing farming practices into a more streamlined and efficient process.

He addressed everyone, especially our hard-working farmers, emphasizing that it's not just about breaking world records, but about sparking inspiration among Filipino farmers. He encouraged them to adopt modern farming technologies to ensure our food security, increase yields and income, decrease the production and cost of kilo per palay, and most of all, improve farmers' livelihood across the country. This aligns with the overarching goal of Bagong Pilipinas, which prioritizes food security to guarantee food supply for the nation. Let's inspire and innovate within the field of agriculture to pave the way for a prosperous future.
